Leo Fortess Collection, Kaneohe, HI
Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco, Fine African, Oceanic and Pre-Columbian Art, 12 February 2010, lot 4082
Property from a Princely collection

Wrist ornaments in highly polished marine ivory.
The flat underside is hollowed out to allow for two connecting holes where a strap could be looped through. Probably dating from the late 18th or early 19th C., with a golden patina of use.
The Kepoikai family was a politically prominent family in 19th C. Maui. Amongst them judge Auae Noa Kepoikai who served as treasurer of the Hawai'ian Kingdom in the cabinet of Hawai'i's last monarch, Queen Liliuokalani. The home in Wailuku, considered a museum of priceless Hawai'ian heirlooms, played host to prominent members of Hawai'i's royal families and Washington dignitaries for many years.
