Native American, Midwestern United States, Missouri, Pemiscot County, Eastern Woodland, ca. 100 to 1000 CE. A hand-carved stone gorget or pendant with a pair of hand-drilled perforations. The rectangular stone exhibits light tan, beige, and brown hues, with the form tapering to the narrow end like an axe or celt. The exact use of drilled stones is unknown; however it is thought that these were perhaps worn as jewelry and may have indicated one's rank or prestige. Size: 3.9" L x 2.8" W x 0.25" H (9.9 cm x 7.1 cm x 0.6 cm)
Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
