Native American, United States, Pike County, Indiana, Petersburg, Eastern Woodland, ca. 100 to 1000 CE. A hand-carved stone pendant or gorget with a singular hand-drilled perforation through the center. The stone is a smooth dark gray hue, and both ends taper inward towards the middle. The hole appears to have been drilled from both sides, with a twisting motion. The exact use of drilled stones is unknown; however it is thought that these were possibly worn as pendants or gorgets and may have indicated rank or prestige. Size: 5" L x 2.375" W (12.7 cm x 6 cm)
Provenance: private Kansas City, Missouri, USA collection, ex-John Townsend collection, formed in the 1970s and earlier
