Description
Originally listed at $300
Native American, Midwestern United States, Illinois, Pike County, Eastern Woodland, ca. 100 to 1000 CE. A hand-carved stone pendant or gorget with a singular hand-drilled perforation through the narrow end. The stone is a smooth dark gray hue, with the form tapering to the rounded end like axe or celt blade, and the edges are rounded and smoothed. The hole appears to have been drilled from both sides, with a twisting motion. The exact use of drilled stones is unknown; however it is thought that these were possibly worn as pendants or gorgets and may have indicated rank or prestige. Size: 4.5" L x 2.125" W (11.4 cm x 5.4 cm)
Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010
