Description
Pre-Columbian Chimu Silver Alloy Rattle & Tweezers w/Chancay Grave Doll (ca. 800-1200 CE). The Chimu worshiped the moon, and silver (preferred over gold by their culture) was thought to be tears of the moon. The 1.25” rattle & 1.75” tweezers present in a clam-like shape with the silver-copper alloy sheet folded at the center. The composition of these pieces (silver to copper ratio) is uncertain due to the thick layers of natural patina. They are both all enveloped in rich emerald green patina with areas of brilliant blue azurite. Accessories like the tweezers (a precursor to the modern razor) and small rattles have regularly been found in mummy bundles and sewing baskets of the Chimu. These items have remnants of fabric from the mummy bundle that adhered. The Chancay/Chimu “mun?eca” is displayed on a custom wood stand. This funerary doll was made by Peruvian Natives in the 1950s-60s. The descendants of the Chancay collect ancient textile fragments to make the dolls, mostly using gauze from petrified mummies. The textiles from burial graves are said to be infused with magical/supernatural powers. These dolls were originally buried with other Chancay grave items during the development of the culture from 1100-1400 AD. Provenance: ex-Dr. Gerald A. Smith collection. A large portion of’ this collection of antiquities is now housed at the Museum of Us (former Museum of Man) in San Diego, CA & Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad, CA.
