Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu culture, ca. 1000 to 1450 CE. Incredible and wearable necklace comprised of numerous small wrapped silver beads strung together with 12 cast silver monkeys and large solid silver tweezer. Each monkey is in an animated pose with elbows resting upon its knees, tailed curled up their backs. Central tweezer was used as a depilatory, to painfully pull chin hairs out, since razors had yet been invented in the western world. Size: 19" L (48.3 cm). Size of tweezer: 1.5" W x 1.625" H (3.8 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Pepe Schaefer collection, La Quinta, California, USA, gifted in 1984 by Bosta Seminarao , Santa Rosa, California, USA, imported into the US 1955 or earlier
