Ancient Akkadian Stone Cylinder Seal, ca. 2300-2200 BCE. Size 30 x 17 mm. Carved dark green stone cylinder seal with contest scene nude hero and buffalo, nude hero and lion. erased inscription. (Line of Sumerian text remaining) Pierced for suspension. Provenance: From the collection of Juliane and Philip, item comes with Professor Lambert report. Professor Wilfred Lambert, the Assyriologist who has died aged 85, was a scholar of ancient Mesopotamia and the world’s leading expert on cuneiform, an ancient form of writing which began as a system of pictographs and, over three millennia, developed into a more simplified and abstract script.
