Description
Pre-Columbian, Caribbean area, perhaps Dominican Republic, Taino (Arawak) Indians, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A hand-carved stone celt depicting an abstract avian creature on the obverse face. The bird dominates the bulbous head with an enormous pair of eyes, perhaps representing an owl, and with a petite beak beneath; slender legs curve inwards along the lower body. Size: 10.875" L x 3.75" W x 1.4" H (27.6 cm x 9.5 cm x 3.6 cm)
