Item Details
Description
Hans Leonhard Schäufelein (probably workshop) 1480/1485 probably in Nuremberg - 1538/1540 Nördlingen The present panel painting with the Christian motif depicts the scene in which Jesus Christ is mourned after the removal of the cross. The depiction of the painting reveals a constellation of figures known and widespread for the scene. Mary, the Mother of God, Mary Magdalene and other biblical figures, whose facial expressions and gestures convey grief, pain and despair, are arranged around the body of Christ. Remarkable is the wide landscape with a castle in the background, in which the clear blue sky is executed. Iconographically, the color blue stands for proximity to the kingdom of heaven and is often used, for example, in the color of Mary's clothing, while the color red, on the other hand, is intended to illustrate the suffering of Jesus. The blue background that characterizes the picture can serve as a reference to the fact that Jesus has already overcome the phase of physical suffering and thus presents his belonging to the kingdom of heaven. What is unconventional in this scene is the positioning of the twelfth disciple Judas in the foreground of the picture. This biblical scene - probably from the workshop of Hans Schäufelein - was executed with oil on a wooden panel, in which parquet flooring was attached to the back for support. The work is set in a solid, gilded wooden frame. A professional restoration and partial retouching were carried out. Frame size 80.5 x 66.5 cm, picture dimensions 64.5 x 50.5 cm. Oil on wooden panel (parquet), professionally retouched and restored. R. 80.5 x 66.5 cm, picture dimensions 64.5 x 50.5 cm. Provenance: European private collection
