Description
Ceremonial Woman's Mantle, Bolivia, Late 18th - Early 19th C. Crafted by the Pakasa Aymara people from Achiri, Department of La Paz, Bolivia, this Ahuayu, or ceremonial women’s mantle, stands as a testament to the exceptional qualities of alpaca fleece, fine spinning, dyeing, and weaving in the Pacajes region. The Inca, recognizing the excellence of alpaca herds in Pakasa, likely utilized fibers from this area for many of their ceremonial textiles. This exceptionally large textile boasts a natural dyed black ground color, a distinctive feature unique to the Pacajes region. The black dye is derived from the leaves of the Shinus Molle (Quechua, millu or tree) or Peruvian Pepper Tree, following a dye recipe that traces its origins back to Pre-Columbian times. Despite the passage of centuries, the textile remains in excellent condition. Size: 38" x 40" (97 x 102 cm).
