Bolivian Ponchito Textile, 19th C. This superb and rare ceremonial man's garment. It emerged as a significant replacement for the tunic in Aymara rituals, prompted by the Spanish prohibitions of 1780. Notably, it exhibits masterful control of the intricate 8-color dyeing, spinning, and weaving techniques necessary to create these esteemed heirloom jewels. The format adheres to the ancient Inca dictate associated with the important Salar de Uyuni tribe. This particular piece is in near mint condition, featuring separately woven and applied fringe. Collected in the field in Bolivia over forty years ago, this Ponchito originates from the Northern Department of Potosi. Crafted with alpaca warp and weft and employing natural dyes, it showcases very finely executed spinning and weaving. The textile boasts a full spectrum of natural dye stripes and fringe. Remarkably, despite its age of over two hundred years, the vibrant colors stand as a testament to the dyer’s exceptional skill. These textiles were once worn by the mallkus, chieftains of the Charka Aymara, befitting their esteemed status. Size: 22" x 35" (56 x 89 cm).
