Mid/Late 19th C. T'alla Mama/Chieftain's Wife Ceremonial Mantle; Calamarca, Dept. of La Paz, Bolivia. Natural dyes; alpaca. During certain ceremonies the T'alla (chief woman or chief wizard) of the Calamarca Aymara wore a distinct mantle, iscayo, that demonstrated minimalist stripes, the number of which were dictated by religious conventions. In this example the weaver added an unusual woven band of tribal symbols. Size: 37.5'' x 47'' (95 x 119 cm).
