Description
Southeast Asia, northern Thailand, Chiang Rai province, Wiang Kalong, Lanna kingdom, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A beautiful pair of earthenware vessels manufactured in the Wiang Kalong kilns in northern Thailand and enveloped in pale, celadon glaze with dark underglaze decoration. First, the vase presents an elegant silhouette with a piriform body, a dramatically attenuated neck, and a flared rim, all sitting upon a ring-shaped foot. Thick bands of meandering vegetal motif separated by horizontal striations adorn the vessel's body. Alternatively, the bowl features a shallow basin with sloping walls that spread out to a raised rim, all on a ring-form foot. A tondo at the center of the interior basin features the image of a stylized fish, while rings of abstract, linear decoration embellish the interior rim and exterior walls. Size of larger (bowl): 3.4" Diameter x 11.6" H (8.6 cm x 29.5 cm)
According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "The distinctive glazed ceramics produced at Kalong, in Chiang Rai Province, northern Thailand represent a regional tradition that emerged in the 15th century to service the kingdom of Lanna. Clay sources in the vicinity of the Mae Lo River that passes through Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai Provinces determined the location of the kilns. Most examples have been recovered either at the cluster of kilns or in the vicinity of the Lanna citadel at Wiang Kalong. They have also been recorded, in considerable quantities, as grave goods in hill community burial sites in Tak Province."
Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

Condition
Vase has been professionally repaired with restoration and repainting; all done very well and difficult to notice. Chipping to foot of vase and rim of bowl. Both have expected pitting, nicks, and abrasions, commensurate with age, but otherwise bowl is intact and both have excellent presentations. Good remaining pigments and nice craquelure to glaze. Encrustations in areas. Vase has label on underside of base reading "Puerto Galera Minor," likely denoting the place it was found.
