John Hancock 1767 Signed Ship's Receipt, PSA MINT 9
A partially printed receipt, made out in the hand on John Hancock (1737-1793), recording a shipment of provisions at Boston Harbor. 1p, measuring 6.5" x 4.5", Boston, MA, dated September 28, 1767. Signed within the text as "John Hancock", documenting the transport of "fifty barrels of pork, one hundred & fifty barrels bread & ten barrels flour" on the Sloop "Sally" which is bound for Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. Countersigned by the ship's captain James Dickey at lower right. An abbreviated list of the ship's freight also appears on the reverse. Darkened toning to edges with light staining present throughout, not affecting text; minor tearing at edges. Else, near fine. PSA slabbed and graded Mint 9, measuring 6.5" x 10" overall.
John Hancock was one of the wealthiest men in the colonies at the time of this document, having inherited his uncle's highly profitable import/export firm, House of Hancock, in 1764. It was also during this time that Hancock, under the guidance of his mentor Samuel Adams, became more politically active against British taxation. Soon after, John Hancock rose to become one of the most important figures in the colonies' struggle for independence.
