Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco type, ca. 100 BCE to 300 CE. A pottery sculpture of a seated female figure with highly burnished surface with remains of painted pigments and earthen encrustations. She is seated upon outstretched legs wearing a beaded waistband, bangles, earrings, and a septum piercing. A vent hole in the top of the head leads into the hollow body. The smooth burnishing is ideal for applying black and beige pigments on top of the slip, and there are stippled lines on her neck and legs. West Mexican cultures practiced shaft tomb burials, building vertical shafts leading to burial chambers that not only held the deceased, but also pottery offerings and figurines such as this. Size: 7.5" L x 3.5" W x 9.5" H (19 cm x 8.9 cm x 24.1 cm)
