Description
Grouping of Civil War and Military related documents. 1st item - Copy of Special Order No. 64 from Head Quarters 2nd Division Army of the Frontier Camp Totten Mo April 15th 1863 by order of Brigadier General Vandever. This order details the court martial trial of Lt. Colonel Henry N. Frisbie of the 37th Infantry Illinois Volunteers. In October 1863, Frisbie resigned to accept a promotion as a Colonel in the 22nd Regiment of the Corps De Afrique and was one of the first white officers to lead an African American unit in the Civil War. The unit saw action in 1864 during the seige of Port Hudson on the Mississippi and the Red River Campaign. Frisbie was later breveted a Brigadier General in 1865 for gallant and meritorious services during the War. 2nd item - St. Georg Tucker Co. VA Nov. 28th 1862 letter to Jacob Fansler by order of Brig. General Milroy, Captain Horace Kellog Commanding Post. The letter details robberies perpetrated agains Union citizens by a band of "guerrelos" and orders Fansler to pay $142 for the losses. Failure to pay will result in the seizure of property, their property burned, and the men shot. 3rd item - 1863 Washington Co., VA payments of George Wofford to E. Wright witnessed by the Justice of the Peace. 4th item - newspaper excerpt from the 1857 Uniontown, PA newspaper mentioning Governor Andrew Johnson's "democratic habits". 5th item - Department of the Interior Washington D.C. letter dated November 12th, 1867 from acting Secretary of Interior, W. T. Otto (William Todd Otto) authorizing a deduction of one month from Thomas Jones prison sentence at the Connecticut State Prison resulting from a Naval Court Martial. 6th-8th items - American Legion Auxiliary letter with envelope postmarked Feb. 11, 1967 to Mrs. J. F. Howell, wife of Confederate soldier Julius F. Howell, one of the last Civil War soldiers who lived in Bristol, VA. The letter asks Mrs. Howell to consider placing some of her husband's items with the Southwest Virginia museum. Includes a picture of "General" Howell in uniform walking down the stairs and escorted by a military soldier. 9th item - 1923 document stating J. D. Boushall and J. M. Taylor bought the Hotel property at Reynoldson Gates Co., NC in 1859-1860, and together conducted Reynoldson Institute. The institute closed in 1861 because of the "War between the States". 10th item (not pictured) - Confederate States of America War Bond Coupon in the amount of four dollars enclosed in a small display box.
Condition
Overall good condition except where noted. 2nd item - folds, toning, creases losses to middle fold, margin losses to left, right, and bottom. 3rd item - even toning, fold lines, minor losses to right and bottom edge. 4th item - three or four brown/tone spots. 5th item - some bleeding of ink, a few scattered brown spots. 9th item - toning, wrinkling and some staining and losses to corners of page.
