NARES BRITISH ARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1875-76 Admiralty document 'Appointing Captain Feilden, naturalist to Polar Expedition', outlining conditions and pay, ink on 3 sheets, stapled upper left, folio, 22 February 1875; and 4 further manuscript documents (2 Admiralty, 1 War Office, 1 kept copy by Feilden) relating to Feilden's appointment, pay, and role in the Arctic Expedition, dated 10 March 1875 to 20 May 1878 (5) Footnotes: 'The conditions of your appointment as regards pay, provisions, and clothing are to be the same as those of the Lieutenants of the Expedition, the single pay of a Lieutenant viz- 10s a day from the date of your appointment... and double that amount from the date of the Expedition leaving England...'. Feilden is officially appointed as naturalist aboard H.M.S. Alert on 22 February, although he made note in his Arctic Journal that he was appointed on 1 February. The other documents relate to subsequent questions that arose about his rate of pay, and a request from the Admiralty for Feilden 'to supply a list of published papers in connection with Natural History results of Expedition 1875-76 to Arctic Regions'. Provenance: Captain Henry Wemyss Feilden (1838-1921), naturalist on the British Arctic Expedition, 1875-1876; thence by descent.
