Description
1909 1st ed Heart of Antarctic Shackleton Nimrod Expedition Voyages Arctic
An incredibly rare and valuable first edition printing of Ernest Shackleton’s account of the 1907 Antarctic Expedition. Also known as the Nimrod Expedition, this voyage, like many at the time, were focused on reaching the geographic South Pole, but with dangerous encounters, harsh weather, and deadly ice, many difficult circumstances slowed the journey. And while Shackleton and crew never made it to their goal destination, the expedition was not considered a failure. It included the first ascent of Mount Erebus and the discovery of the approximate location of the Magnetic South Pole.
Shackleton published ‘Heart of the Antarctic’ shortly after his voyage ended – a large two volume account which features full and double-page engraved photographs of the ship, crew, and Antarctic landscapes.
