The word "toile" means "cloth" in French, so toile de Jouy literally translates to "cloth from Jouy"Rare, a complete set of 105 plates illustrating the designs and styles of the 18th and 19th centuries.105 b&w plates in a presentation folder. The folder hinge/corner has unfortunately been pasted in contact with plate no.105 (the last page)' Condition is complete, brittle edges to antique glossy paper have evidence of chipping losses, tanning darker at edges Encased in a paper-over hardboard folio with a fabric-hinged spine. 8.5 x 12 inches. The title page translation reads: Vieilles Toiles de Jouy XVIIIe Siècle - Premier EmpireGuerinetThis is an ex-libris copy from the Ethel H. Traphagen collection, having been part of the design library from the Traphagen School. Note: The Traphagen School of Fashion was an art and design school in operation from 1923 to 1991, and was located at 1680 Broadway in New York City. The school was founded and directed by Ethel Traphagen Leigh (1883–1963) with a focus on the foundational concepts of the American design movement. This was one of the earliest fashion schools and played a role in the development of American fashion by educating over 28,000 students in 68 years of operation.
