NARES BRITISH ARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1875-76 FEILDEN (HENRY WEYMSS) A pair of watercolours, captioned 'Cape Desolation, June 28 [18]75'; 'Old Sukkertoppen. N. Lat 65-40 W. Greenland. An Arctic Sketch, 3rd July - 1875 H.W.F.', watercolours on paper, captioned on the image, each signed ('HWF') lower right, each mounted, framed and glazed, images to view 110 x 275mm., and 125 x 270mm., 1875 (2) Footnotes: TWO WATERCOLOURS MADE BY H.W. FEILDEN ABOARD H.M.S. ALERT WHILST OFF THE COAST OFF GREENLAND. His written account of the days on which they were executed are recorded in his manuscript journal. 'Monday 28 June 1875. Cape Desolation... 3 o'c a.m. passed out of detached ice... 7.15 Passed through a stream of loose ice. Skirted the ice all day... undoubtedly the outer edge of the East Greenland drift coming round Cape Farewell... not far from Cape Desolation bore E. by N. distant of forty-five miles by observation'. On 3 July he noted 'Wind dead foul... During the tacks when we neared the shore, we had splendid views of Greenland scenery... 'The Land of Desolation'... my eye never rested on a more melancholy land... when the sun dipped below the horizon... it departed in a blaze of glory, spreading a warm purple hue over the mountain tops, and lighting up ice-stream and snow drifted valley with delicate shades of pink and salmon colour', and on 4 July 'On deck middle watch... till 1 a.m., were then nearly abreast of 'Old Sukkertoppen', a very prominent, isolated round mountain close to the shore' (H.W. Feilden, Arctic Journal... 1875-1876, edited by Trevor H. Levre, Hakluyt Society, 2019, p.60 and p.63). Similar watercolours made off the coast of Greenland between 1 and 6 July, were inserted by Feilden into his Journal, and are reproduced in colour in the Hakluyt edition.
