NARES BRITISH ARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1875-76 'Crystals of Quartz. From neighbourhood of Floeberg Beach. Grinnell Land. H.W. Feilden', sample of quartz, approx. 50 x 35 x 25mm., with caption in Feilden's hand on tag Footnotes: A piece of quartz collected by Nares Expedition naturalist and geologist H.W. Feilden, when the H.M.S. Alert set up winter quarters at Floeberg Beach at latitude 82.27N., from where several sledging parties explored the northern shore of Grinnell Land, Ellesmere Island. Provenance: Captain Henry Wemyss Feilden (1838-1921), naturalist on the British Arctic Expedition, 1875-1876. Nares' request to take a professional geologist was denied by the Admiralty, so Feilden was tasked with this job which he carried out with great success, Trevor H. Levere noting that Feilden's 'work in geology was indeed his most valuable and enduring contribution to the scientific results of the expedition...' and that it 'was to stand unsurpassed until the middle of the twentieth century...
