Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Hohokam people, ca. 1000 to 1450 CE. A palette tool hand-carved from a flattened piece of gray slate, the slightly raised border around the shallow pan area is incised with triangular cross hatched shapes and spirals. The Hohokam were gifted potters, painting many of their wares using pigments that may have been held on palettes such as this. The true use of these palettes remains unclear, and some researchers have suggested that the slabs were used for the preparation of hallucinogenic plants. Size: 6.75" L x 4" W (17.1 cm x 10.2 cm)
