Army Regulations, Adopted for the Use of the Confederate States…Also, Articles of War. Richmond, VA: West & Johnson, 1861. 8vo (5 1/8 x 8 3/8 in.) One quarter morocco with marbled boards. First edition. Parrish & Willingham 2215.
With contemporary inscriptions in ink and pencil to front interior board: "John F. Campbell Co. F 5th Pa. Cav." Ink inscription to rear interior board reads "This Book was found at Williamsburg Va near Yorktown Peninsula." (Inscription appears to originally be in pencil with a later hand tracing in pen).
John Campbell was a 19-year-old turner from Philadelphia who enlisted on 5 August 1861 as a private and was mustered into Company F of the 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Known as the Cameron Dragoons, the 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry patrolled throughout Virginia, including the area near Yorktown where this Confederate book was captured. Campbell re-enlisted on 1 January 1864 and saw major action later that year in the First Assault on Petersburg. He would also participate in the Appomattox Campaign in the final year of the war. Throughout his enlistment he was promoted to corporal (undated) and sergeant (1 July 1865) during his enlistment. He mustered out with the regiment on 7 August 1865 at Richmond, Virginia.
Condition: heavy wear to binding edges, boards cracked and scratched.
