4 Antique Civil War Engraving Plates regarding the Elmira Prison Camp, all from the important civil war book entitled THE ELMIRA PRISON CAMP: A HISTORY OF THE MILITARY PRISON AT ELMIRA, N. Y. JULY 6, 1864, TO JULY 10, 1865 by Clay W. Holmes, A.M. Published by G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York and London, The Knickerbocker Press, 1912.
The plates include: an Outline Map of the Elmira Prison Camp on page 24; and 3 plates of the original passes issued to Berry Benson on his return from Elmira Prison (Chapter XIV - Sergeant Benson's Story - as written by himself), including:
Br> 1) Prisoner Pass authorizing travel from Elmira Prison in New York to New Market, Maryland. Issued to Sergeant Benson, "By Order of Brig. General Johnson Hagood" page 277;
2) Rail Road Pass issued to Benson on November 2, 1864 (during Grant's siege of Petersburg, Virginia (General Robert E. Lee) and signed by the CSA Provost Marshall, likely the Provost Marshall under Maj. David B. Bridgford, Lee's Provost Guard. This Certificate's typed section provides: that it was issued by the "Confederate States of America, War Dept." on "Nov. 2, 1964" and "Subject to the discretion of the Military Authority" and has the following physical description of the Benson: "Description: Age: 21 Height: 5'9" Eyes: blue Hair: light" . The certificate has hand-written name of Benson, the pass holder, as well as the geographic area "Petersburg: Page 251;
3) Pass sent to Benson's "command" and reads as follows (page 251) HD. QRS. VALLEY DISTRICT, October 30, 1864. Pass Sergeant Benson Company H, 1st South Carolina Regt., McGowan's Brigade, Wilcox's Division, to his command, he being an escaped prisoner. Quartermaster will furnish trans-portation. By order of Lieutenant-General J. A. EARLY SAMUEL J. C. MOORE, A. A. Gent. The following endorsements transcribed across the face: No. 551. Transportation in kind furnished from New Market to Staunton, Va. Oct. 31, 1864. M. E. PRICE, A. Q. M. D. No. 5545. Transportation in kind furnished to Richmond, November 1, 1864. G. E. PRICE, Capt. A. Q. M. Transportation furnished in kind to camp. D. W. WOOD, Maj. A. Q. M. "In kind" means that the actual transportation was furnished and not money to purchase it, or to reimburse the holder for money expended for it.
