Front interior board with contemporary ink inscription: "(Private Property) / Daniel Jenkins / 1st Lieut. Co. E. 51st Regt. / New York, Vol."
The private copy of regulations of Daniel E. Jenkins who enlisted on 19 August 1861 in New York City as a sergeant. He was mustered into Company E of the 51st New York Infantry on 9 September 1861. Known as Shepard Rifles, the Regiment departed to Maryland and then joined the Burnside Expedition seeing the Battles of Roanoke Island and New Berne. The then saw other major conflicts including the Second Battle of Bull Run (Manassas), Antietam, Fredericksburg, and the Wilderness where Jenkins was killed in action. During his service, Jenkins was promoted to first and second lieutenant (both promotions are listed as 1 November 1862) and to captain on 14 March 1863 and transferred to Company H.
