Description
[CIVIL WAR]. USN officer's belt attributed to Captain O.S. Glisson.

Private purchase belt of Pattern of 1852 General Service featuring a British style laurel wreath and appears on belt plates produced through the American Civil War. As per the 1852 regulations, the belt plate features an Eagle looking over its left wing with an anchor clutched horizontally in its talons and thirteen stars running along the rim. Item is set in a black leather textile lined belt with silver wire border and laurel running along its length and an attached hangar. Item lacks visible manufacturer markings. (Item shows cracking to the leather with some abrasions and scuffs, some moth holes to the textile liner, tarnish over brass pieces, and some loose threads to the laurel).

Provenance: Consignor relates that this belt was purchased as part of a grouping associated with Rear Admiral Oliver S. Glisson (1809-1890), who served as captain of the steamer USS Santiago de Cuba from 1864 through 1865.
