M.W. Berriman. The Militiaman's Manual, and Sword-Play without a Master. New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1861. 12mo (4 ¾ x 7 ¼ in.) Illustrated plates of sword techniques. Original embossed red cloth. Second edition.
With contemporary ink inscription to interior board and front fly leaf: "Maj. J. W. Romeyn / 1st Divis. Staff / Michigan / Detroit, Nov. 14th/61".
James W. Romeyn enlisted on 16 May 1861 at the opening of war as a first lieutenant. He was commissioned into Co. I of the 4th Michigan on 20 June 1861. With the regiment he saw many of the important early engagements in the east including First and Second Bull Run and Antietam. He resigned his commission on 17 October 1862 as he was promoted to major and aide-de-camp to General Orlando B. Willcox.
Condition: some chipping to spine caps, rubbing to corners.
