Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian Canopa from the Central Coast of Peru. Incan Empire, ca 1200 to 1532 CE. Highly detailed canopa with a hollowed-out interior. Canopas are the most common ritual effigies known from the Incan Culture. Canopas are often buried in the animal corrals to protect the herds and increase their fertility. This particular container depicts a llama with a flat base, a raised head with perky ears, and drooping neck folds. The hole on its back would have been filled with offerings like coca leaves, maize, or animal fat in order to appease the gods. Exhibits good patination and correct manufacture for the type. Material is most likely a form of granite. Measures 4" long and 3 1/2" tall.
