Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Incan Empire, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. A fine hand-built pottery aryballos with a rounded base, a globular body with a tapering shoulder, a squat neck with a flared rim, and a pair of applied strap handles. The highly-burnished body exhibits a repeating series of concentric lines adorned with circular ornamentation and hanging tassels, all in a deep red-brown slip. The neck is adorned with a solid band of red, and petite horizontal stripes embellish each of the handles. Vessels like this example were used to ferment, store, and transport large quantities of chicha, a type of beer made from corn. Custom lucite display stand included. Size: 13.5" W x 14.25" H (34.3 cm x 36.2 cm); 15.425" H (39.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Area of repair to rim with small losses, some resurfacing, and light adhesive residue along break lines. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small nicks to base, body, handles, and rim, with fading to some areas of pigmentation, and areas of darkening from the firing process. Nice earthen deposits and light mineral deposits throughout. Old inventory label on base.
