Description
Japanese Blue and White Porcelain Vase: Makuzu Kozan II (Japanese 1859-1940) c. 1917, represents the artist's studio. It is a finely potted vase decorated with a cedar forest painted in underglaze blue cobalt. The artist skillfully modulates the blue hues to create a sense of depth in the forests. Two lone forms of dead trees at one side symbolize the cycle of life within the forest of old cedars. It is signed on the base with a five character mark of Makuzu and comes with a tomobako with inscribed "Flower Vase" (kabin) and "Underglaze Blue Landscape with Cedar" as well as with an ink signature of Kozan II and the red seal of the Makuzu Studio on the underside of the box cover.
