Japanese Ando Cloisonne Bowl, probably 1932 in date, represents the cloisonne tradition started in the 19th century. The bowl is hammered copper with enamels applied to the surface. The decorative scheme, a cherry tree and willow, dominate one side of the bowl. The other side is inscribed with turquoise enamel.The inscription is a poem about the reconstruction of Tokyo after the 1923 earthquake. The bowl was commissioned by the imperial government in 1932 as a gift to celebrate the renewal of Tokyo. The base bears the Ando seal stamp.
