Description

Glenn T. Seaborg Signed Nobel Prize Lecture & Card Listing Transuranium Elements

A pair of two items signed by chemist Glenn T. Seaborg, including a printed copy of his Nobel Prize-winning lecture entitled "The Transuranium Elements: Present Status", originally given on December 12, 1951, and a card inscribed with the 10 elements he and his team at the University of California, Berkley discovered: "Pu, Am, Cm, Bk, Cf, Es, Fm,/ Md, No, 102". Both items have been boldly signed "Glenn T. Seaborg". The 26-page lecture has been stapled together at top left, with creasing along middle left of the packet and general toning throughout. Docketing in blue ink present on verso of the 4" x 6" card, else no visible flaws. An overall interesting pairing highlighting important developments in nuclear chemistry.

A winner of the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry alongside partner Edwin M. McMillan, Glenn Theodore Seaborg (1912-1999) was most recognized for his work on the discovery of transuranium elements, mainly plutonium, among others. Earlier during World War II, he headed a group at the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory which devised the chemical extraction processes used in the production of plutonium for the Manhattan Project. Due to his expertise in the field of nuclear research, Seaborg would also go on to serve as a policy advisor to ten separate U. S. Presidents, ranging from Truman to Clinton. Indeed, it was his discovery of transuranium elements, and with them superheavy elements, that would become one of the most significant changes to the periodic table since Dmitri Madeleev's 19th century design.
