This lovely head and shoulders photo of Hesse in a business suit and tie was taken by Gret Widmann (1875-1931), who was both a photographer and a painter. She, and her husband, Fritz Widmann (1869-1937), also a painter, were friends of Hesse’s. Hesse had Gret Widmann portray him in her studio in three photo sessions, once in 1910, then in 1926, and then again in 1929, when this image was taken.
Hermann Karl Hesse (1877-1962) was a German-Swiss poet, novelist, and painter. In 1923, Hesse resigned from German citizenship and acquired Swiss citizenship. Hesse’s work is themed on an individual's search for authenticity, self-knowledge, and spirituality. Hesse’s best-known works include The Glass Bead Game, Siddhartha, Steppenwolf, and Demian. In 1946, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
