Hermann Hesse Nobel Prize Poet 1955 TLS
HESSE, HERMANN. Typed Letter Signed, “H Hesse”, in German, 1p, 6” x 8.25”, Montagnola, January 1955. Hesse has made several notations and corrections in his hand. Recipient address information at verso. A few tiny holes where the typewriter has punched through paper. One central horizontal fold, two very minor crimps at left edge, else Fine condition. Untranslated.
Hesse writes to Maria Bulcke, thanking her for her “surprise greeting”, reminding him of a time “that I hadn't thought of for a long time”. Hesse also mentions “a dear handsome boy, whether that was the one who died in the war?” And lastly, he discusses the ailments which prevent him from writing a real letter, “my eyes, my hands and my head refuse and the daily burden is great.”
Hermann Karl Hesse (1877-1962) was a German-Swiss poet, novelist, and painter. In 1923, Hesse resigned from German citizenship and acquired Swiss citizenship. Hesse’s work is themed on an individual's search for authenticity, self-knowledge, and spirituality. Hesse’s best-known works include The Glass Bead Game, Siddhartha, Steppenwolf, and Demian. In 1946, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
