GORDIMER NADINE: (1923-2014) South African Writer and Political Activist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1991. T.L.S., Nadine Gordimer, one page, 4to (folding airmail stationery), Johannesburg, 28th March 1977, to Michael Popkin of the Frederick Ungar Publishing Co. in New York. Gordimer informs her correspondent, in part, 'You have my permission to print the excerpts from my critical writings, listed in your letter of March 21, in your forthcoming reference work, MODERN BLACK WRITERS… I am agreeable to waive even a nominal fee, but feel, in my turn, it is not unreasonable to expect a copy of the book in lieu of a fee…' Together with a typed carbon copy of Popkin's list of suggested excerpts, including passages relating to Peter Abrahams, Alex La Guma and James Ngugi etc., published in the Michigan Quarterly Review and others, 1961-75, dated 21st March 1977. With two file holes to the left edge, and two red ink annotations written by the publishers, a small single tear to a fold on the right edge and age wear. G, 2 Modern Black Writers was compiled and edited by Popkin, and published by Ungar, New York in 1978.
