Description

Henry Heimlich Signed Archive- TLS & Publications, Ca. 1987

An archive relating to American surgeon and medical researcher Henry Heimlich, consisting of (1) TLS, (2) signed reprinted publications, and (1) unsigned publication. The letter, dated September 21, 1987 on letterhead from The Heimlich Institute reads in full: "Thank you for your 9/14/87 letter and interesting comments about modern medicine. Enclosed is an autographed reprint of the original Heimlich Maneuver publication to include in your book. Information about other medical advances is also included." The publication in question, entitled Pop Goes the Café Coronary has been signed and inscribed "To Alfred Kaiser/ Henry J. Heimlich/ 9/25/87" in blue ballpoint pen, as well as A Life Saving Maneuver to Prevent Food-Choking, similarly inscribed. Also included is one unsigned but related publication from an event held for SUNY-Binghamton on January 11, 1984 entitled Scientific Innovations and World Peace. Varying degrees of toning, creasing, and minor soiling throughout. Else, very good. An extensive collection highlighting Heimlich's contributions to public safety.

Henry Judah Heimlich (1920-2016) was an American thoracic surgeon and medical researcher who is widely credited as the inventor of the Heimlich maneuver, a technique first introduced in 1974 as a way to prevent food choking. The Maneuver was widely implemented by both the American Red Cross and American Heart Association as a primary first aid technique to clear victims' obstructed airways between 1976 and 2005. Today, additional methods are also acknowledged including back blows and chest thrusts, with the term "Heimlich Maneuver" more generally referred to as "abdominal thrusts."

Dr. Alfred J. Kaiser (1919-2003), a physician and anesthesiologist, was a Harvard graduate who received a degree in Medicine as a general practitioner. After joining in the United States Army during World War II, he would settle in Hatfield, MA where he would dutifully serve the surrounding community for decades to come.
