This Rhode Island manuscript document presents that Amos Chace (a Cordwainer and late Revolutionary War Veteran) while serving as a Solider in Gen'l Sulivan's Life Guard in Col'o Archibald Crary's Regt. in the service of the State of Rhode Island has bargained and sold unto William Hall (of Stoughton, Massachusetts) and appointed him the agent and attorney to collect fifteen pounds, four shillings, six pence, all of his depreciation payment due.
The document measures approximately 7.75 x 12.5". The red wax seal is still intact. Light age wear but in overall fine condition.
Amos Chace (1746-1803) was born in Swansea, Massachusetts, and died in Providence, Rhode Island. He served in Colonel Archibal Crary's Regiment of Militia in 1776. In 1778, Chace served under Major General John Sullivan at a time when General Sullivan was cooperating with the French Admiral Charles-Hector, Count d'Estaing, against the British and Hessians who occupied Newport, RI under the command of British Genral Pigot.
On March 11th, 1776, from his Headquarters in Cambridge, MA during the siege of Boston, General George Washington issued a General Order to Colonels or Commanding Officers of Regiments in the Continental Army. General Washington's order directed these officers to select four men from each regiment who would form that officer's "personal guard."
