Confederate General Ambrose P. Hill (1825-1865) Signed Document, 1853. Per Alexander Autographs, Inc.: "Ambrose P. Hill (1825-1865) Confederate lieutenant general who led Hill's Light Division through the battles of cedar Mountain, Antietam and Chancellorsville, led the III Corps at Gettysburg, killed in the final defense of Petersburg. Very rare A.D.S. "1st Lieut A. P. Hill" in the text and signed again "A. P. Hill 1 Lieutenant" on verso, 1p. 8vo., Culpeper Court House, July 14, 1853 in which Hill seeks an extension of a leave granted to him on account of illness. In full: '1st Lieut. A. P. Hill of 1st Regt. of Artillery having applied for a certificate in which to ground an application for a continuation of his leave of absence I do hereby certify that I have carefully examined this officer [himself!] and find that his digestive organs are much deranged and have diseased and that in consequence thereof he is unfit for duty- And I further declare my belief that he will be unable to resume his duties in Fla. during the summer months. dated at Culpeper Ct. Ho. this 14th day of July 1853.' Possibly removed from a larger document, yet complete in itself and in very good to fine condition." This Alexander Autographs, Inc. article is taped to back of frame. The document has been professionally framed and matted with photograph of Ambrose and plate with his name, title, and year of birth and death. Document measures approx. 6 1/2" X 8". The document is double framed, letting you see both front and back. Frame measures 14 3/8" X 19 5/8". The Larry Mangus Collection, Corinth, Mississippi.
