Item Details
Description
General Earl Van Dorn, General Daniel Ruggles and Braxton Bragg Chief of Staff, General Thomas Jordan. This document concerns an August 22, 1862 document addressed to General Ruggles by a C. T. Strucke(?), requesting he be allowed to serve in the Confederate States of America Army. Strucke(?) stated that he was citizen of Prussia in Germany and held no property in the Confederate or United States. He stated he would be obliged if he would be allowed to serve. This document is signed by General Earl Van Dorn, General Daniel Ruggles, and General Thomas Jordan. (1) General Earl Van Dorn (1820-1863) was born in Mississippi and served in the Mexican War before resigning his U.S. Army commission in 1861 to join the Confederate Army as brigadier general. He lost two major battles, Pea Ridge and Corinth, because of poor staff cavalry command that he used brilliantly at Holly Springs, destroying so many supplies that Maj. Gen Ulysses S. Grant's Vicksburg Campaign had to be rescheduled. Described as a lady's man, Van Dorn, was killed by an irate husband at his headquarters in Spring Hill, TN, in 1863. (1) General Daniel Ruggles (1810-1897) saw action in the Seminole and Mexican Wars. When the Civil War broke out, he resigned his commander of the 1st Division/II Corps in Gen. Albert Sidney Johnson's Army of Tennessee. He was slow in positioning his troops at Shiloh, however his men took part in the initial assault on Major Gen. William T. Sherman's camp and at the Hornet's Nest. His military career faltered after Shiloh, finally being appointed head of the Confederate prison system. (1) Brigadier General Thomas Jordan (1819-1895) served in the U.S Army in various capacities following his graduation from West Point. He attached himself to P. G. T. Beauregard as a adjutant general at First Bull Run where he won Beauregard's attention. On staff duty in Corinth he drew up Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston's battle orders for Shiloh. Thereafter, his fortunes diminished along with Beauregard's and he accepted the chief of staff position to Braxton Bragg. The document measures approx. 6 1/4" X 7 1/2". The document is double framed, letting you see both front and back. Frame measures 16 3/4" X 22 3/4". Also included is a caricature of Earl Van Dorn, possibly from a book. The Larry Mangus Collection, Corinth, Mississippi.
