Description
Civil War Special Order # 377 Discharge From Service Speech given at Boston on July 30th 1861 by Adjutant General William Schouler who also signed this document. Honoring the 5th Mass Volunteers returning home after participating in the Battles of 1st Bull Run, Blackburn Ford, Sudley Springs Ford, and Henry House Hill in Virginia. The 5th Regiment was personally named by President Lincoln as "The Steady Fifth" and one of the very few Volunteer Regiments to ever be issued Regular Army Blue Uniforms! NOTE: Colonel Samuel C. Lawrence was wounded in action at Sudley Springs Hill during this service, after his regiment was ordered to lay down on the field while Artillery Shells were flying over their heads. Colonel Lawrence refused, he remained standing over his men and was wounded then carried from the field of battle. A relative of Lawrence named W.H. Lawrence a Color Sergeant for the 5th was killed while standing with Colonel Lawrence.
