Description
GEORGIAN ENGLISH STERLING SILVER TANKARD / CANN, tapered cylindrical form with reeded accents, scrolled handle, and a gilt-washed interior, including an old tag label with handwritten inscription of "Purchased in 1942 or 1943 by C.H. Howell, Sr. in Denver, Colo." Exterior side under rim impressed with "[?] R" maker's mark, possibly for John Robins, and four hallmarks of a lion passant for sterling fineness, a crowned leopard's head city mark for London, a "B" date mark for 1797, and a King George III duty mark. Total weight: 14.235 ozt. Circa 1797. 4 3/4" H, 3 1/4" D rim.

Cleves Harrison Howell, who was born on August 13, 1880 in Keokuk, Iowa to parents Harrison Scott Howell (1830-1909) and Lucy Singleton Taylor (1838-1906). His maternal grandfather and grandmother were William Henry Harrison Taylor (1813-1894) and Anna Tuthill Harrison Taylor (1813-1865). Through his grandmother, Cleves was the great-grandson of William Henry Harrison (1773-1841), who served as the 9th U.S. President for 32 days before his death. Through his grandfather and grandmother, he was also the great great-/ great great great-grandson of Benjamin Harrison (1726-1791), who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and served as the Governor of Virginia amongst other political offices.

Condition
Very good to excellent overall condition with minor wear, surface scratches, nicks, some losses to interior gilt-washed finish, minor denting along foot rim.
