Twelve complete issues of The Gentleman's Magazine for the banner year of 1776, with a early British printing of the Declaration of Independence by which the erstwhile British colonies tore off the yoke of British oppression and became the United States of America. Of the nine maps and plans, four of them, in the issues from September to December, are of regions crucial to the battles of the growing conflict. Other maps include the South Pole by Bowen from the explorations of James Cook, with another of Cook's tropical discoveries, also a plan of Cambridge and projections of the eastern and western hemispheres.
