Nakamura Tekisai; KASHIRAGAKI ZOHO KINMO ZUI TAISEI, "Illustrated Universal Encyclopedia, with Headnotes," illustrated by Shimokobe Shusui, d.1798 (Kyoto: Kyukodo, 1789) 21 vols in 5, 8 7/8 x 6 1/4 in., in traditional Japanese fukurotoji bindings: dark blue paper covers with applied printed title labels. An updated and expanded edition of the compendium first published in 1666, blending systematic practical knowledge with the supernatural and wide-eyed curiosity about the outside world, beautifully illustrated and well printed.
Provenance: From the Estate of Lionel Katzoff (1936-2022) longtime Baltimore resident and collector of Japanese art. Mr. Katzoff's collection of hand-printed Japanese books was the subject of an exhibition, "Gathering Jewels," at the Walters Art Museum in 2004. Proceeds from the sale will go to the Walters.

Covers with general light wear, particularly along the edges; lacing broken on two volumes. Texts with mild toning but very good overall
