Hanabusa Itcho, 1652-1724, and Suzuki Rinsho, d.1802; GUNCHO GA-EI, a collection of sketches (Edo: Hanabusa Heikichi, dated 1778, but probably later) Three volumes bound as one, 10 1/4 x 7 in., in traditional Japanese fukurotoji binding: light blue embossed cover printed with colorless glaze, with title label, in a cloth clamshell case. Contains black and white woodcuts illustrating fairy tales, genre scenes, still lifes and landscapes.
Provenance: From the Estate of Lionel Katzoff (1936-2022) longtime Baltimore resident and collector of Japanese art. Mr. Katzoff's collection of hand-printed Japanese books was the subject of an exhibition, "Gathering Jewels," at the Walters Art Museum in 2004. Proceeds from the sale will go to the Walters. Ex-coll. Arthur and Charlotte Vershbow, with copy of a fax from Israel Goldman concerning this and another related book.
