Kishida Hideto; NIPPON NO SHIRO, "Castles of Japan," illus. by Hashimoto Okiie, 1899-1993 (Tokyo: Kato Hanga, 1944) 11 1/4 x 8 in., in traditional Japanese fukurotoji binding: white cover printed with the title and with original dust jacket, in a cloth chitsu folding case. Contains 12 bold color woodcuts; and 2) Onchi Koshiro; SHINSHO FUJI, "New Aspect of Mt. Fuji" (Tokyo: Honsha, 1946) 11 3/8 x 8 in.; limp boards reminiscent of traditional Japanese binding, embossed and printed blue and white cover; original pictorial dust jacket with cloth chitsu folding case. Typed description by former owner Charles H. Mitchell tipped in.
Provenance: From the Estate of Lionel Katzoff (1936-2022) longtime Baltimore resident and collector of Japanese art. Mr. Katzoff's collection of hand-printed Japanese books was the subject of an exhibition, "Gathering Jewels," at the Walters Art Museum in 2004. Proceeds from the sale will go to the Walters.
