Item Details
Description
This lot includes the Twenty-ninth Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology, 1907-1908 published by the Smithsonian Institute. This report, Twenty-ninth Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology focuses on the ethnogeography of the Tewa Indians of the Upper Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico. 21 black and white plates; 31 maps and diagram are found within the over 600 pages of this book. The Tewa are a linguistic group of Pueblo Native Americans who speak the Tewa language and share the Pueblo culture. Their homelands are on or near the Rio Grande River in New Mexico, north of Santa Fe. Established by Congress in 1879, the Bureau of American Ethnology (initially the Bureau of Ethnology) was given the responsibility to conduct "anthropologic researches among the North American Indians" (Bureau of Ethnology, 1st Ann. Rep., xi) at a time when change was occurring very rapidly. The effort that followed lasted nearly a century and played a defining role in the development of American anthropology as a discipline. Its written record is truly exceptional. The in-depth documentation, through text and illustrations, of Native American history, culture and linguistics is of a kind rarely seen today. This olive green cloth bound gold gilt stamped book is in fair to good condition. The cover has a gold gilt and colourized image of a Tewa elder, possibly a chief based on the bonnet worn. On the spine, the title and images of a torch and basket are also in gold gilt and colouring. Staining and scuffing are noted to the cover edges, pages have age tanning and water staining. Some pages are loose, spine is loose. Measures 7.5"W x 11.75"L x 1.5"D
