This historic early Engraved Map with Chart of the Pacific to Asia that measures 21.25" x 17.25", double-sheet size, previously laid down on thick heavy cardboard to 23.75" x 20" for framing and display. The underlying cardboard has caused overall heavy tone yet the Map and its colors remain prominent and ready for reframing and display. This is Janssonius' fine chart of the Pacific including the West Coast of America with California prominently shown as an Island, opposite Japan and a small Australian coastline. This is the earliest Sea Chart of the Pacific to appear in a Dutch Atlas. Japan and the Philippines are shown but are misshaped and wrongly placed. New Guinea is shown as a fictitious chain of islands stretching halfway across the Pacific, being based on an idea from reports of Magellan's voyage. California shown as an Island with a flat northern coastline being taken from C.Blanco to C. de S.Lucas with the Vermilion Sea and Coast of Pearls. Decorated with thumb lines and a compass rose at the very center of the map and two vignettes at top right and bottom left.
