Description
Claiborne County, Mississippi legal authorization for a slave valuation. This one-page 1850 court document approves of the assignment of an appraiser to determine the value of slaves belonging to the estate of John M. Powell, a common practice in slaveholding areas. Once the court-ordered appraiser determined the monetary worth of the slaves, an estate could be more easily settled between heirs.
The legal order is written legibly in ink on one side of the document, verso contains docketing notations.
