Description
A GAR or Grand Army of the Republic badge official National Encampment badge for the annual meeting held in 1917, Boston, Massachusetts. The badge is made of four parts attached by metal loops: a bald eagle gripping a sword and scrolls, an American flag reading ‘GAR Representative’, a small replication of the Boston Old State House, and a medal featuring the image of the GAR Commander William J. Patterson, with text on the verso ‘51st National Encampment GAR Aug. 1917 Boston, Mass.’ This last piece is no longer attached to the rest of the badge. Attached to the verso is a yellow ribbon. Overall 6 in. in length. The GAR would hold these National Encampments every year in a different big city for veterans to attend with their families. Presented in its original 3 x 7.5 in. cardboard box.
