Washington Buttons
Unique (1789) George Washington Inaugural Button "Eagle and SUN" Type with Single Line Outer Circular Border Unique Design Type Not Listed by Albert or in J. H. Cobb
(1789) George Washington Inaugural Button, "Eagle and SUN" the SUN, together with the Single Line Outer Surrounding Border are Unique being a major design variant Type, Unlisted in Albert and Cobb, (Similar to WI-13C), Unique with SUN & LINE, the Only Example and Finest Known, Very Fine.
A likely Unique Major Design Type. The Only Example Known; This Type is Not Listed by Albert, nor does it appear in the famous J. H. Cobb catalog. 34 mm. The design of this Unlisted and Unique Button is similar to the more common "Eagle and Star" Type (Albert WI-12), yet what appears above the American Eagle is clearly the "SUN", (reminiscent of the "Sun" previously displayed as important features on the 1776 CONTINENTAL DOLLAR and 1787 FUGIO Cent), and is not a Star. In this, it is similar to Albert WI-13C, but instead of having a segmented border, this button has a single incuse line forming its surrounding outer border. This Button has even dark-chocolate surfaces with some modest micro-porosity, yet displays very sharp details and appears quite attractive overall. There is some traces of reddish metallic color to the Eagle's tail feathers. The original Shank is lacking on the reletively smooth, even reverse. There was no example of this type George Washington Inaugural Button in the Stack's sale of the historic Cobb collection in January 2003. A rarity collectors truly "Unique" opportunity to purchase this supremely rare major variant, obviously critical to acquire for the completion of a full Type Set of George Washington Inaugural Buttons.
